movie Kantara: Chapter 1, is a prequel to the 2022 film "Kantara." The
story is set in 300 CE, during the reign of the Kadamba dynasty in

(11) Kantara: A Legend Chapter – 1 Story / Plot:
The movie is a mythological action drama that serves as an origin story, delving into the events that took place long before the original film. Set in 300 CE during the reign of the Kadamba dynasty, the story explores the mystical forests of Banavasi and the origins of the "Daiva" tradition and the "Bhuta Kola" ritualistic dance that were central to the first film. Rishab Shetty will portray a "Naga Sadhu," a warrior-mystic who acts as a bridge between the mortal and divine worlds. The film is set in a much earlier historical period, during the reign of the Kadamba dynasty (around the 4th century CE), a thousand years before the events of the first Kantara movie. The story centers on the mystical Kantara Forest, a land believed to be created by the deity Parshuram and protected by divine beings, particularly the Panjurli Daiva (boar spirit) and Guliga Daiva. The forest holds a sacred garden—often referred to as Eeshwarana Hoothota (God's Garden)—rich in valuable natural resources. The conflict begins when the King of Bangra (King Vijayendra's father) attempts to trespass into this forbidden, sacred garden to exploit its riches but is struck down by divine power, likely the Guliga protector. His son, King Vijayendra, learns from this tragedy and vows never to enter the forest. The protagonist is Berme (played by Rishab Shetty), a young, powerful, and eccentric warrior of the local tribal community in Kantara. He is shown to have an extraordinary connection to the forest and is eventually revealed to be linked to the divine Panjurli spirit, similar to the main character in the original film. Berme and his people rely on the forest's produce for their livelihood. They begin venturing out to the port to trade their spices and other products, a sign of their growing economic independence. This new ambition brings them into direct conflict with King Vijayendra's son, Prince Kulasekhara (played by Gulshan Devaiah), who is power-hungry, egoistic, and resents the tribe's growing strength and their control over the valuable forest resources.
Kulasekhara, defying his father's vow, leads the royal army into the forest, leading to clashes with the natives. The prince views the tribe as a threat and aims to destroy their way of life to seize the land. Amidst the growing tension, Berme develops a connection with Princess Kanakavathi (Kulasekhara's sister). However, in a major twist, Berme discovers that Kanakavathi is the true, hidden mastermind behind the conflict. She uses a local tribe practicing black magic and prompts her brother Kulasekhara to attack the forest to fulfill her selfish ambition: to capture and control the power of Kantara's sacred Daivas. When Kulasekhara tries to burn down the tribal village and the sacred garden, Berme confronts him. In a dramatic climax, Berme is possessed by the spirit of the Daiva—manifesting the ferocious form of Guliga. The divine power brutally kills Kulasekhara, but the chaos and fire cause immense damage to the forest and the tribe.
The final sequence reveals Kanakavathi's full plan, which involved manipulating her brother's ego. She seeks to attack the now-vulnerable Berme using the spirit of her own ferocious ancestor. Berme, seeking the Daiva's ultimate blessing, dives into the mysterious circular pit where he was found as an infant. Possessed by a formidable spiritual power, he battles Kanakavathi. When she refuses to be touched by a man, Berme transforms, embodying a dual male and female form (akin to Ardhanarishvara or the feminine deity Chavundi) to defeat her, killing both the princess and the regretful King Vijayendra, who tries to intervene. The story establishes the core legend of the divine protector, Panjurli, the history of the land dispute, and Berme's origin, setting the stage for the original Kantara film's events.
