'Mary Kom' Has A Decent Week

A Decent Week

After a good weekend at the box office that saw the collections gain momentum with every passing day, Mary Kom enjoyed stable weekdays at the box office. As mentioned last week, the word of mouth ranged from average to good and hence the collections didn't really hit the roof. Still, they were consistent enough to ensure that the film earned around 42 crore in Week One. Considering the fact that releases of last two weeks, Raja Natwarlal and Mardaani, couldn't come anywhere close to these collections even in their lifetime (leave aside the opening week) this is a feat good enough for Mary Kom.

Having said that, considering the pre-release hype as well as industry and trade endorsements, one expected the trending to be a tad better. It isn't bad by any means but then it isn't exceptional either, which would have made it a candidate for turning out to be the highest grossing heroine-driven film.

Beginning this week there is a plethora of releases till the arrival of Bang Bang and Haider on 2nd October, what with 10-12 films in the pipeline. Though most of these aren't really notable, they would still eat up the screen space, hence proving to be some sort of competition for Mary Kom.

As things stand today, respective record of Queen (Kangana Ranaut) and Kahaani (Vidya Balan), both of which just about crossed the 60 crore mark, seems safe. Still, Priyanka Chopra can take pride in the fact that she would have at least a 50 crore success running solely on her shoulders.

Realistic 'Finding Fanny' Takes On Fantastical 'Creature'

Two films as different as chalk and cheese release this Friday. While Finding Fanny is an out and out multiplex film, Creature would register a presence amongst the masses. Both films have women driving the show as Deepika Padukone and Bipasha Basu are leading the show here. In fact their last association with the respective directors had paid off as well, what with Deepika and Homi Adajania delivering Cocktail and Bipasha along with Vikram Bhatt releasing Raaz 3 earlier. The promotion has been good too with the makers ensuring that their films get some good buzz in place well before the release.

All of this means that both films should get a decent start at the box office. Though one isn't expecting a blockbuster start here, the face value attached to Finding Fanny should attract youth at premium multiplexes across the country, especially at major cities. On the other hand Creature would start off well at single screens with much better footfalls at B and C centers.

Both films are arriving at a time when women central protagonists are fetching audience, case in point being Mardaani followed by Mary Kom. Also, since both films belong to different genre, it isn't really a clash per se as respective producers T-Series as well as Dinesh Vijan & Fox are ensuring that they get good enough screen space. Having said that, eventually it is the content that counts and with good entertainment being promised for the target audience with industry insiders, who have had a dekko already, claiming that there is good meat in there, Finding Fanny as well as Creature should prove to be plus outings.

The Real Reason Irrfan Khan Left Vashu Bhagnani's 'Welcome To Karachi'

We had reported that producer Vashu Bhagnani was planning on replacing Irrfan Khan with his son Jackky Bhagnani on account of the former's unprofessional behavior. The story went that Irrfan didn't board a flight to London and informed Vashu that he would join the shoot next month. This angered Vashu and he decided to replace him. He had said that he even lost of money because of Irrfan decision.

While other sources have disputed this, we now know Irrfan's side of the story. He doesn't want to work with the British actress that Vashu has cast int he movie. According to Irrfan it's not only about the British actress, but even the other actors who were originally meant to be a part of the film were not there anymore. Vashu defends himself by saying it is the director's prerogative on who should be cast and he also goes on to say that Irrfan has returned only part of the money paid to him. Looks like this tussle will not end for a while. Vashu is all praises about Arshad Warsi though and looks forward to working with him.
