He made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed coming-of-age film Dil Chahta Hai (2001), which won a National Award for Best Hindi Film. He directed films like Lakshya (2004), Don (2006), and its sequel Don 2 (2011). As an actor, he debuted in the musical drama Rock On!! (2008), which earned him a National Film Award (as producer) and the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He won a Filmfare Award for Best Actor for portraying athlete Milkha Singh in the biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013). He co-founded the production company Excel Entertainment with Ritesh Sidhwani in 1999. Other notable acting roles include Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), The Sky Is Pink (2019), and Toofaan (2021).

Next came the commercial successful Don (2006), his third directorial venture, post which he directed a short film titled Positive (2007) to spread awareness on HIV-AIDS .
