Bollywood's Original 'He-Man' Dharmendra Deol


         Dharmendra Deol was a legendary Indian actor and politician, widely regarded as one of the greatest and most versatile stars in the history of Hindi cinema. Known as Bollywood's original "He-Man" for his rugged action roles, he passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 89. In a career spanning 65 years, he worked in over 300 films, holding the record for starring in the highest number of hit films in Hindi cinema.
 
-> Dharmendra was born in Nasrali, a village in Ludhiana district, Punjab, British India on 8 December 1935. He was the son of Kewal Krishan and Satwant Kaur. 
 
-> Dharmendra won a film magazine talent contest and made his debut in the 1960 film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. His breakthrough came with the 1966 blockbuster Phool Aur Patthar, which established him as a leading man.
    
-> Over a career spanning more than six decades and over 300 films, Dharmendra excelled in various genres. He was equally acclaimed for his intense dramatic performances in films like Satyakam (1969), his comic timing in Chupke Chupke (1975), and his iconic action roles in movies such as Mera Gaon Mera Desh and the cult classic Sholay (1975), where he played the memorable character of Veeru.
    
-> He formed one of Bollywood's most popular on-screen pairings with actress Hema Malini, whom he later married in 1980. He also shared the screen with his sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol, in films like Apne and the Yamla Pagla Deewana franchise.
    
-> In recognition of his immense contribution to Indian cinema, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan (India's third-highest civilian award) in 2012 and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. 
   
-> He married Prakash Kaur in 1954, and they had four children: sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol (both actors), and daughters Vijeta and Ajeeta.
   
-> He married his frequent co-star Hema Malini in 1980 while still married to his first wife, as polygamy was not permitted under the Hindu Marriage Act at the time. He and Hema Malini had two daughters, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol.
    
-> Beyond acting, he briefly served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Bikaner, Rajasthan, from 2004 to 2009, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was also known for his love of Urdu poetry and farming at his farmhouse in Lonavala. 
 
-> The war drama Ikkis (2025), based on the life of Arun Khetarpal was the final film of his illustrious career, however he died before the release of the film.
 
-> Dharmendra died on 24 November 2025 at his residence in Mumbai, at the age of 89 following age-related illness. His last rites were held at the Pawan Hans crematorium in the Vile Parle area of Mumbai, with family members and numerous film-industry colleagues in attendance.

-> Dharmendra's passing was widely mourned across India, with tributes from fellow actors and political leaders alike, who remembered him as a warm-hearted and humble human being.
