The film marks the debut of celebrated fashion designer Manish Malhotra
as a film producer. He established his production house, Stage 5
Productions, in September 2023. Malhotra has often stated that his
entire life and career were inspired by his childhood "ishq" (love) for
Indian cinema, and production is his way of giving back to the industry.

True to his roots, Manish Malhotra personally designed the costumes for
the film, along with Shivank Kapoor. The 1990s setting allowed for a
specific aesthetic to match the nostalgic, old-school romance vibe.

The film was initially titled Ul Jalool Ishq (meaning "Audacious Love"
or "Nonsensical Love"). The name was changed to Gustaakh Ishq: Kuch
Pehle Jaisa (meaning "Audacious Love: Something Like Before") in April
2025, a title that has been widely praised for its poetic quality.

Vijay Varma is predominantly known for playing intense, negative, or
grey characters in recent years. He expressed excitement about shedding
that image to play a "gentle, poetic lover" in this film, describing the
experience as a refreshing change that felt like "hot chocolate in
winter".

Varma studied at the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII),
where Naseeruddin Shah was a teacher, though they weren't in the same
batch. Varma had long idolized Shah and worked backstage in his theatre
productions, making the experience of sharing the screen with him a
deeply emotional full-circle moment.

The film was shot in a start-to-finish schedule in early 2024,
primarily around Amritsar and Delhi. During filming, actress Fatima Sana
Shaikh had an epileptic seizure episode on set, which Varma described
as a "helpless" moment for the crew.

The collaboration between the legendary composer Vishal Bhardwaj and
lyricist Gulzar is a major highlight, contributing significantly to the
film's nostalgic and poetic atmosphere.

Naseeruddin Shah's character, a retired poet, delivers actual poetry in
the film written by contemporary poet Ashok Singh Mizaj.

The film had its world premiere at the 56th International Film Festival
